440-IH Straightaway!?!...Going through the archival section of the Track & Field News Web site, I came across this interesting tidbit of information.  In the 1915 USA National Championships, William Meanix won the 440-yd. hurdles in 52.6 seconds, an incredible time for that era. Only that year they decided to run the event on a straightaway!  Meanix's time did not count as a record because it was considered wind-aided.  It wasn't until 1927 that this time was matched on a two-turn oval.”
