    American president Jimmy Carter declined to send the 1980 USA Olympic team to Russia because that country had invaded Afghanistan and the Olympics were part of Carter’s boycott plan. At the ’80 USA Trials the following California community college athletes qualified for the 1980 team: Gwen Gardner, John Powell, Dan Ripley, James Robinson, Kate Schmidt
