State Meet Reflections - Highs & Lows

Antelope Valley College hosted a memorable state meet…for many reasons. The beautiful Mondo facility and well planned stadium and press box was buffeted for two days with cold 20-30 mph winds. Some events were aided (discus) and some, those around the track, were hindered.

When the meet concluded the Laney women had brought their school its first state women’s title, while the Riverside men’s legacy was further enhanced with its third consecutive title.

History set: Riverside’s men’s program joined CCSF, Long Beach CC, and Mt. SAC as schools that have won three or more men’s consecutive titles: LBCC 1979-83 (5), 1986-88 (3), 1993-95 (3); Mt. SAC 1997-2002 (6); CC San Francisco 2004-6 (3).

Historic highs: Discus (aided by up to 30 mph winds)…Men: Nate Moses-Fresno CC: 192-11(2nd farthest in state meet history); Women: Samantha Gutierrez (Riverside) 168-03 *MR, breaking Moorpark’s Tai Battle’s 165-0*MR throw in 2006. Long Jump…Women: Lauryn Newson (Laney) won at 20-9.5 (2.3mph tailwind)…farthest jump, with or without wind, since 1993.

Triple Jump…Chris Bernard (Riverside) 53-02 (6.1mph)...2nd farthest wind-aided TJ since 1989-Lofa Kahadia-Riverside: 54-4 ¼ (Alex Norca-LBCC jumped legal 53-8 in 1993).

Historic Lows (blame the wind!): Men’s 1500: won at 4:04.17 (First 4 minute plus time since event began in 1976)…Men’s HH: 6.0 mph. tailwind caused step problems-three hurdlers DQ… 800s: women’s race  2:18.52-slowest since 1999…men’s race 1:59.18-slowest metric race-began in 1976…Men’s 5000: won at 15:56.27-slowest since first metric race in 1976 (*MR-14:10.4-Vicken Simonian (LACC)-1976)… Men’s 1600 Relay: 3:15.42-slowest since metric relay began in 1976.

Trivia First: Brothers Mark and Luke Frazier (CCSF) went 1-2 respectively in the men’s steeplechase.

Kudos to: The AVC administration, staff, and volunteers who worked tirelessly to host their first state track & field championship. And, most notably, to Mark Covert, AVC meet director, who had the vision, energy, and management skills to pull his dream off in admirable fashion.
